Under the spreading chestnut tree

Aunque las traducciones de "1984", de George Orwell hablan de un "nogal de ramas extendidas", lo cierto es que deberían referirse a un castaño:

Under the spreading chestnut tree
I sold you and you sold me
There lie they and here lie we

Esta misteriosa cancioncilla viene rondándome la cabeza desde que leí "1984", y supone en la novela el anuncio de una traición, y también el recuerdo de otras anteriores. Encontré, no recuerdo dónde, una reseña acerca de un doble sentido que se perdía en la traducción. Intrigado, hice una búsqueda en la red, que sin embargo no aclaró mis dudas. Lo único que encontré fue, de nuevo, la afirmación de que en el original existía un doble sentido que se perdía en la traducción, sin más especificaciones.
Por cierto, también me di cuenta de que no soy el único blogger a quien la cancioncilla ha atrapado.
Y encontré esta curiosidad:

Esto se supone que es el mapa político del mundo de "1984".

Y también esta otra:

Under the spreading chestnut tree
There we sat just you and me
Oh how happy we would be
under the spreading chestnut tree.

La cancioncilla la encontré en una página titulada We know campfire songs, es decir: "Nos sabemos canciones de campamento". La mayor curiosidad es que la canción va acompañada de un baile:

Desde que leí esto no puedo quitarme de la cabeza la imagen de Winston haciendo el bailecito.
